Cumberland Brewing Co. (CBC) is located in the heart of the village’s main street. Since opening in late 2014, CBC has had little trouble selling virtually every drop of its beer right where it is brewed, either by the glass in the cozy tasting room or sun-soaked patio behind the brewery, or in take-away growlers.

Until recently the brewery never packaged its beer in cans or bottles, but after the smaller ‘squealer’ size growler became unavailable CBC decided it was time to make their beers available in smaller to-go sizes. They asked us to help roll out a set of simple labels to can their core and rotating seasonal beers, with the plan to launch an artist series of labels featuring local Cumberland-based artists.

THE SIMPLE LABELS
Our goal was to make a simple template that could work for every beer style they canned and only use colour to differentiate them on the shelves.
Soon afterwards we developed a template for their small-batch seasonal beers, that they could handwrite the needed content on.
THE ARTIST SERIES
As part of the longterm plan with their labels, the template was also made to easily allow local artists to have their art featured on the cans. So roughly a year after the original labels were released, the first series of art labels launched, and primarily featuring some of the friendly & talented staff you may meet at the brewery.
We worked with each artist to help develop their ideas, make sure their art worked within the template, and kept the CBC’s branding cohesive across all labels.
THE FOREST FOG
We were grateful to be offered one of the labels and be the first released in the series. We even got to choose to be on our personal favourite beer.
Since a portion of this beer is donated to the Cumberland Community Forest Society, we to reflect that in the label illustration and focused on the ecosystem, flora, and fauna found around Cumberland.
ARTIST LABEL #2 – FINALLY IPA
The second label released was by Cumberland-based artist, and longtime server at the CBC, Sham Sandhu.
ARTIST LABEL #3 – DANCING LINEBACKER
The third label released was by Cumberland-based tattoo artist, Dale Orton.
ARTIST LABEL #5 – JUST A LITTLE BITTER
The fifth and final label released was by long time server and artist, Bryn Ball.
Together they still keep their familiar colour palette to remain consistent to the pre established branding.
